The longtime business leader and philanthropist with strong ties to New Orleans and southeast Louisiana, Jim Bob Moffett, former president and CEO of the oil and gas giant Freeport McMuran, died at his home in Austin, Texas, Friday night. Confirmed to WDSU by family members. Moffett co-founded and managed the Fortune 500 from his downtown New Orleans office building for nearly 30 years. Moffett, a former University of Texas footballer, has sponsored the local PGA Tour event for years and has been very generous in giving back to local charities and universities like Tulane, LSU, Audubon Nature Institute, and New Orleans City Park. Moffett has been fighting a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 82 years old.
