Jeopardy honored former host Alex Trebek and his impressive legacy on the popular game show with a touching tribute video that aired at the end of the Friday episode. Trebeek passed away in November 2020 From pancreatic cancer at the age of 80.
Trebek has hosted the long-running Jeopardy series since 1984, and his contract was to run until 2023. New Trebek’s hosted Jeopardy episodes continued to air through early 2021.
The new video shows Trebeek over the course of 36 years on the show talking to the contestants and acting in his usual friendly capacity as Peter Allen / Dean Pitchford plays “Once Before I Go.” The video ends with the message, “Dedication to Alex Trebek: Forever in Our Heart / Always Our Inspiration”.
The day after Trebek’s death, Jeopardi praised him in another short video His tweet reads: “Today we honor Alex Trebeek. For more than three decades, he has brought integrity, humor and intelligence to his duties as a host for Jeopardy. He will be in our hearts forever.”
In 2019, Trebek announced He has been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancerBut he remained optimistic. “Normally, the prognosis isn’t very encouraging,” Trebek said, “but I’ll fight it, and I’ll keep working.”
In January 2020, Entertainment Weekly asked What he wants to say on the final episode of JeopardyTrebek said, “I’ll say goodbye and say to the people, ‘Don’t ask me who is going to replace me because I don’t have an opinion at all. But I am sure if you give them the same love, attention, and respect that you have shown me over the past 30 years, they will be successful and the show will continue to be successful. Until we meet again, may God bless you, goodbye. “
Jeopardy producers are currently testing guest hosts as the show finds a permanent alternative to Trebek. Ken Jennings, One of the greatest contestants in the show’s history, would be the first in a series of guest hosts. Episodes hosted by Jennings and other temporary hosts will air beginning January 11th.
